When the sport of powerlifting was born in 1964, there had to be some rules made. The first president of the International Powerlifting Federation, Clay Patterson, decided that bench press benches had to be made according to the rules in the interest of promoting standardization in the fledgling sport.
Nowadays all benches are made to conform to the rules of powerlifting. But here’s the REAL news. See, because everyone makes powerlifting benches according to the same rules, 1) everyone’s benches are indistinguishable from one another, and 2) NONE is made for athletes outside the sport of powerlifting!

By the way, we HIGHLY recommend that our spotter rails be a standard feature on all SportStrength bench press benches you purchase. Why? SAFETY in the weight room is ALWAYS the right thing to do!
Simply put, folks, this is clearly the CADILLAC of all bench press machines!
