Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

SimonK's picture

Hello Dr. Squat,

When people talk about Tom Platz and his amazing squatting abilities they often mention the video of him doing 23 reps with 500 lbs. at an exhibition.
That is of course a VERY impressive weight, an amazing feat!

Now my memory might be playing tricks with me, but when you had a "squat duel" with Tom Platz (during what I think was called The Great Squat-Off or something similiar?) I believe Tom Platz did even more reps with an even heavier weight.
Can you clarify this Puzzled:

My question in short is: Didn't Tom do an even heavier weight for even more reps (during an exhibition)?

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

Tom and the Doc did two things - squat for max and reps with the same weight. Doc won the max, Tom the reps for weight (it was 500 something if I recall).

Yeah, I remember they did a one-rep max, and then a rep-max.
My question is though, the video that people commonly link to shows Platz squatting 23 reps with 500 lbs, but was that his max weight/reps or did Tom Platz - at an exhibition, perhaps the Great "Squat off" as I remember the name - do even more?

Did they do the max day in the same day?If the did then dr squat had an advantage but anyway he would win we know that but I would wanted to see what is tom platz maximum capability! By the way anyoen knows how much did tom platz lifted for a max rep and how much did dr squat lift for max rep? what was tom platz weight at the time and dr squat?

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

Fibo in Germany, around 1993. Over 10,000 people watching. Platz squatted with 7 plates...765. Kaz (linfting him from behind) helped him out of the hole, but the crowd didn't care. After all, Platz is of German heritage (so am I, but they didn't know that). I went rummaging around for a couple of 10 pound plates to add...got a bit nervous when I discovered that someone had forgotten to bring any small plates along. On went another 90 pounds. UGH! 855. Dug deeper than I ever had dug before! I made it! THAT was an unofficial WR!

Then the bar was unloaded to 539 or thereabouts (someone brought over a couple of 10 kilo plates). Platz went first. 23 reps. I managed 12 or 13...

We were both under 200 pounds BWT

Mr. Hatfield,

Thanks for the reply. Is it correct then that this video of 23 reps with 500 lbs ( http://youtube.com/watch?v=_gZ_9YsvI1k ) was NOT filmed after the 1 rep max efforts in Fibo, Germany, since Tom Platz actually squatted 539 lbs for 23 reps, and not 500 lbs?

Or IS that video the one from Fibo, Germany 1993, and people just have it wrong - there are in fact around 539 lbs on the bar and NOT 500?

(So it is wrong of people to mention his 23 reps with 500 lbs as the best lift since Tom has done 23 reps with 539 lbs?)

Please clear the confusion for me Smiling

Tom Platz has stated he once did 585 for 23.

Methodman> keep us updated!! Are you in contact with Platz? He is my idol!

Platz

Platz is my idol as well!!! I met him in person at the Arnold Classic in either 1993 or 94 and got my picture with him. He was super friendly and not trying to sell ANYTHING!

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

OK...memory fails...will contact Tom and ask him what was on the bar. Someone bump this up from time to time until I get an answer. Yes, Tom was an an amazing athlete, no question!

Platz doing high reps with high weight reminds me of the German BB'ers. They tend to believe in higher volume training from what I can see. Ruhl, and a few others mentioned in articles their training constists of higher reps then most American bb'ers. I think the name most recently used was even called "German Volume Training" Either way it is Ironic that Platz does high weight/reps and has German herritage.

Platz would be a tough one to win the German crowd from even if one had German ancestory. The blondes (mostly from the Saxony area up north) are highly regarded and respected. Even in older times German power struggles usually ended with the Saxons being in control rather then the southern provinces like Bavaria because the Saxons were considered the most kind and fair. In pre christian celtic times the blondes were considered suns and sometimes worshipped like gods.

Honestly, the only mean blondes I have met had brown eye brows (posers haha) "Blondes have more fun" and if you dont believe that look at sales figures of products that bleach the hair. haha

Poliquin uses GVT a lot in his recommendations for putting on mass. The good old 10x10 squat routine will put mass on just about anybody

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

holy shit yes i agree, i did the GVT with squats once and it hurt to walk and sit for a week, probably the hardest workout i ever had was GVT with squats and bench

I always assumed it was blond naturally, hm... Laughing out loud

Dr. Squat, I thank you for trying to get in touch with Platz.
May I ask you a favor though? - Will you ask Mr. Platz if he'd be willing to communicate with his fans (via e-mail)? It seems there isn't much activity on his website (and the related e-mail).

Tom Platz

From what I understand, his website is going through a transition. However, it will be updated and enhanced.

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

HAHA, I thought he was called the Golden Eagle or something like that. I still respect the guy I always saw pictures of him after the dye job

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

Sorry, I misread. He really dyes his hair? HAHA wow

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

Bumpin this up from WAAAY back to get the actual weight that was on the bar for the squat off reps and the 1rm max platz hit.

i didnt know u were both under 200, thats just sick! did u both go just a belt or did u use suits and wraps of the time?

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

We only hgad 45s, so Platz ended up doing 775 and I did 865. We both repped out with 505 or 595 (I assume, this,, knowing that nothing smaller than 45s was used except for the collars...do the math).

We both used suits and wraps of the day...spandex things...

Platz now resided in Phoenix...he called me once, but I didn't get his e-mail address..forgot!

Tom Platz vs. Dr. Squat

I have a Tom Platz story. My great uncle was a recreational powerlifter and one day several years ago he and Platz had a squat contest (for max I believe). My uncle equalled his max and Platz gave him two Gold colored 50lbs barbell plates as a prize. We still have them. Of course, I heard that Platz was slightly out of shape and detrained at that time, but still. . .
