I am about to buy a leg curl/ leg extension machine and was wondering out of these 2 which are better? One is seated leg curls other is lying leg curls.

I had to make the same decision over the summer
Search for posts with my name and you'll find some more comments. I ended up getting this one which is a traditional lying version:

but was seriously considering this one which uses a cam for the plates:

I'm happy with the unit I got, rugged and heavy as all get out with a nice set of sealed bearings on the pivot point. My one complaint is that the angle is just slightly off and so for leg curls, there is no resistance at the very top - makes for a good squeeze but I think it's just not quite right. I would think the cam version would correct for that as long as it's aligned correctly but I've never actually used one. I think all of the replies I got said stay away from the seated version because it's not as good a movement as the lying ( at least for leg curls that is. ) I ordered from these guys as well, Big Fitness - very good service and quick delivery as promised.

Do you have the option of a standing leg curl? That would be my preference. Even better, a GHR bench.

GHR is over-priced...
My opinion on GHR is that they are way overpriced. Also, and I've commented on this before, when using a GHR for a while and then going back to conventional leg curls, there was always a significant loss of leg curl strength which to me indicates that the GHR is not working the hamstrings as effectively as a leg curl does. I also find that GHR makes my legs tight whereas the leg curl does not.
Maybe just my experience but if the goal of the hamstring is to move the heal towards the glutes then it seems a leg curl bench hits full range of motion about as effectively as it can be done.

Vaughn, a GHR machine has to be built substantially in order to withstand the tremendous pounding it takes when big guys perform the raise explosively. The action, if performed correctly, requires the hamstrings to first extend the hips and THEN flex the knees. THAT is a full range action, and it clearly involves 2 full range joint actions (at the hips and knees). This simulates a runner's stride, albeit with both legs acting in tandem.

There is a device called a poor man's GHR. It is less effective though because you only get the knee flexion part and not the hip extension part. Still, I like it better than a regular lying leg curl. I might purchase one down the road, just because it's a good way to vary training cycle to cycle and there are not that many choices for knee flexion exercises.

This sorinex one run $359 . . .less than a full GHR bench, but I guess you just can't be that poor and have a GHR.
