I've tried doing front squats in the past, and twice before I hurt my middle back seriously bad before I figured out what I was doing wrong. I was so used to power squats that I was leaning forward and arching my back while doing front squats, just like I do in power squats...
I'll wait for you to finish laughing...
...
Anyway I finally realized this mistake and tried doing front squats with my hips thrust forward, upper body leaned back, while keeping my weight on my heels. This finally allowed me to get a mostly vertical position with my back... but the next day my middle back was still sore! As I understand, the back is almost taken out entirely during a front squat.
Am I sore just because I"m not used to it, or did I do something wrong?
Probably aren't upright
Probably aren't upright enough as a result of the elbows not being high enough, as a result of the bar being out of position. Get on Youtube and pull up some Ironmind training hall films from various Olympic, World, and European championships. That's how you front squat!
I'm actually having a hard
I'm actually having a hard time getting anymore upright than I already am. I cant get my knees and hips to go anymore forward, and cant get my upper back to go any further back. Weight's supposed to stay on my heels, right? Even with the weight on my middle foot it's hard to stay anymore upright.
front squats
1. Elbows higher.
2. Weight lower.
3. DON'T SIT BACK.
Check 'JV Askem front squat'.

You likely have range of
You likely have range of motion issues in at least one if not 3 of 4 major joints, shoulders, hips, & ankles. That's one benefit of front squatting, if you can't do it correctly, you know you have some structural balance issues to work on.
