I've read several articles dealing with the advantages of chains for a shirted bencher, but none covered we who chose to lift without the attire. Are they a viable tool for the raw?
Yes! Chains and bands help raw lifters too. I think the major difference is they should use less chain/band weight. Our raw lifters mostly train the same as our geared lifters, and they are breaking plateaus they had for years before joining the gym.

As a rule of thumb you need less volume. Decrease volume by 30%-40% when using accommodating resistance.
