Burpees and the Winter Family Olympics

After struggling through two children's basketball seasons (simultaneous)and ridiculous amounts of snow this winter, for southwest Virginia anyway, and being inspired by watching the winter olympics my kids suggested we hold the Family Winter Olympics.

Here are some highlights:

My 8 year old daughter Kelison set the record for downhill sledding, no idea what her time was, but we all conceded to her as she is absolutely fearless. Dodging trees and whatnot, this was truly impressive.

I took the uphill sled pull with two kids riding event, as i was the only one stupid enough to enter.

We also did log carrying for distance, snowball throwign for accuracy and distance (finally got that hornets nest out from under the eve of my roof), and speed snowman building (team event).

The highlight of the Family Winter Olympics was the indoor burpee contest. Competing were ...Me (Dad), Kelison (daughter 8yrs old) and Ethan (son 6). My wife was official counter and judge. To set the stage, you should know that both of my children are fiercely competitive with each other, even though my 8 year old girl soundly defeats my 6 year old boy in EVERYTHING. She NEVER cuts him an ounce of slack. She was very confident going into the event..Ethan was quiet, but I thought I saw a certain set to his jaw.....

We started off at a brisk pace, by 25 I was breathing heavy but the kids were showing no signs of slowing...this was going to be hard i thought to myself. At 50, I stayed down, claiming the bronze by default, my legs were jello....The kids were still bouncing like they were weightless superballs....At 75, the pace was slowing, I could tell they were getting tired....I saw kelison eye her little brother checking for signs of weakness. He noticed, and started to smile...Obviously he knew something here....As they passed 90, Kelison resorted to trash talking, she told her brother she could go all day, he did not say a thing in return, he had his game face on, he looked like a berzerk viking, only much shorter.

At 104 Kelison threw in the towel, she was done, she rolled over on her back and said "whatever, he can have it"...Ethan didn't notice, he was on a mission, he had found his calling. The boy is a burpee master. If anything, his pace picked up, he was springing up and down like a piston! The family started to have visions of a Burpee world record, so we got behind him, the crowd went wild! 110, 120, 130..Ethan was in the zone. he had the gold, he wanted the record. "Daddy, whats the burpee world record?" "150" I lied. I don't know, who has ever had the patience to do max rep burpees? The marines maybe? Ethan smiled at my answer, he knew he had it, his first world record.....140, 150.....151.....152!

The crowd (family) erupted in pandemonium! It was like the Miracle on ice back in 1980, only instead of ice, it was carpet, and instead of the evil soviet empire, the underdog had defeated his big sister for the first time ever!

It was the greatest sporting moment I have ever witnessed.

Thanks guys, it was a blast and next time I will definately get video.

Ethan is thrilled to know his "record" is documented on the internet.

Kids are a lot of work, no doubt, but moments like these make you forget all that.

familly stuff is great, just spent the weekend in New Hampshire with my family, skiing with nephews andneices, been doing it for 13 years and this was the first year we could all ski together. awesome stuff.

Let me not judge my fellowmen, but understand them, Lord, and when the casting of the stones begins, remind me of my many sins.

Yukon, I absolutely applaud

Yukon, I absolutely applaud you for not only making sure your kids are physically active, but leading the way by doing it with them!

I know entire lard ass families that combined through the winter had nowhere near the amount of exercise you guys put into a weekend.

Good lesson too, in that make something competitive and it will be fun. Winning is fun & no one likes to lose. Plus learning about winning and losing at a young age is incredibly valuable. Especially in this day and age of everyone gets a trophy and everyone passes the class!

That's a great Story! Family

That's a great Story! Family bonding is really important in one family, And joining family winter Olympics is one way to have bonding with your family.msTrunk pool decking
