Arnold vs. Ronnie

Well, guess I'm a 'victim' of my generation. At the end there is a very nice set of spliced scenes of Ronnie next to Arnold, both in their prime. I would want to build Arnolds body every time - still looks just absolutely incredible to me.

Good Lifting!

Vaughn

My Vote

Arnold. Every time. Never really liked Coleman's physique.

Thanks for posting the video.

Nope, still Arnold.

I met Lee at a World Gym opening a couple of months before one of his Olympia defences. What amazed me the most was that he was so absolutely symetrical that at 260 pounds he looked 'normal' - just a sort of big guy who lifted weights ( this was in street clothes, not a posing exhibition. ) No doubt he was incredible but I still like Arnold's body better. And while it's a different angle, what has Lee done for the sport now that he's retired? Maybe he's still active but it must be awfully low key.

Vaughn, I worked closely

Vaughn, I worked closely with Lee for all of the years he was Mr. Olympia (except the 1st year). We are close friends. What people do not know about Lee can fill several volumes. He is a very active and vocal Christian man, working with kids in the Atlanta area, being featured on the Christian TV Network and a whole lot of stuff like that, all to promote fitness. None of it garners any personal acclaim for Lee Haney, nor has it been designed to do so.

I love the guy. Now Arnold....

All beside the point. Both Arnold and Lee had phenomenal physiques. No one can deny that Lee was far more polished and developed than Arnold, a sign of the simple fact that science marches on. Of course, Arnold was a tremendous talent, far beyond his physique.

Who was the greater man?

You choose.

IMO Haney was the last great

IMO Haney was the last great Body Building Champion. After him guts got too big and symmetry and balance was lost forever.

Another favorite was Sergio Olvia, He was The Myth for a reason!

I agree with you Todd...

The age of the mass monsters and 'freakishness' is ruling the day and while I can admire the work and definitely appreciate the 'science' that went into building those bodies, it's just not appealing to me anymore as a sport to watch although I still love to lift and still see the occasional non-juiced body that's a tribute to the 'glory days'.

Sergio / Arnold (Sorry for the Highjack:)...

Overall natural symmetry = Oliva.
No twisting to hide waist, freaky forarms, massive upper arm to head ratio, fullness down to the intercostals, insane lats, balanced down to the calves.

I'd take Sergio's physique, no question.

Success is how high you bounce when you hit bottom.

Tremendous side-by-side! Who

Tremendous side-by-side! Who agrees with Joe? Anybody care to put up Arnold alongside (my favorite) Bill Pearl?

Joe Skopec's picture

Un-Highjack

Coleman has amazing arms and lats.
Double biceps makes his pecs look bad.
I can see how some would marvel at some of his sheer mass.
Crazy thighs, but no seperation and make his calves look weak.
Brutal, but not aesthetically pleasing or symetrical.

At this stage I take Arnold, even though the legs look slim here:)
He brought those calves up, if only he could've brought the thighs
and kept the seperation and striations.

Working on a good Bill vs Arnold...

Pearl / Arnold

Judging from the top photo,
I think I did a decent size perspective on the posedown.

photos match-ups

Great job on all of these photos! Kind of hard to make an accurate comparison w/ the different lighting, but great nonetheless. Sergio was called the Myth for a reason! I met him shopping in Chicago about 20 years ago. Past his prime, but his forearms were huge, the first thing to catch my eye as I saw him coming down the aisle. He had a nylon jacket with the sleeves rolled up. WOW...

Just to throw another name

Just to throw another name out there. He didn't quite have the size of Sergio, Arnold, or Pearl, but a guy who Had a physique I admired was Mike Dayton. He was as well or even more well known for his strongman shows and feats of strength. Was known for doing endless reps of pull up variations.

Dayton

funny you should mention that. I was just looking at some stuff I downloaded somewhere and I had an e-book of exercises and stuff with Mike Dayton. I never read the whole thing, it was free and I just saved it. I should look it up again.

Franco Columbo

People are going to think me nuts, but I loved that guy.
Winning powerlifting competitions, and a top bodybuilder.

Re Arnold's legs. At his time freakishly big legs would not have won contests. Athletic strong looking legs were the goal.

From FC's website:
Franco has won every important title in bodybuilding and power lifting, an extraordinary achievement. He is a two-time Mr. Olympia, the most prestigious and lucrative title in bodybuilding, and has been Mr. Universe and Mr. World, among others. Even more amazing is the fact that he won his second Mr. Olympia at the age of 40, while completing his studies to become a chiropractor and five years after he had completely dislocated his knee in competition.

His power lifting World Records include: Bench Press 525 lbs., Squat 655 lbs., and Dead Lift 750 lbs. In April 1979, Franco even made it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest lung power. He was able to blow up a hot water bottle until it burst in just 55 seconds using only sheer lung power (that is 28.5 lbs/square inch)!
