1000 pound Bench Presses???

Vaughn Numrych's picture

A while back some YouTube videos were posted about a '1000 pound plus' bench press.

Questions:

What is the current record for a Competition BP? (I know there are different federations but I thought it was around the 800 pound mark )

What is the current record for a Competition DeadLift? (1000 pound barrier hasn't been broken yet in competition with a pass, has it? )

Is there anyone else out there who finds the idea of a 1000 pound bench press just a little bit beyond belief?

Since lifting gear has the least impact on the deadlift, are we on the verge of that becoming the 'weakest' event in the competitions??

And finally, is there anyone who, like myself, feels that straps should be allowed in the deadlift so it's not a test of grip strength but a test of body strength to pick that mother up? Bet the 1000 pound barrier would be gone in a heartbeat if they were allowed and it would be back on par with the squat for highest numbers!

Good Lifting!

I think the bench is up to

I think the bench is up to 1,075. I know 1,074 has definitely been done. 1,003 deadlift was done in competition over a year ago. Most heavier powerlifters will out bench their deadlift. You'll never see lifting straps. Most powerlifters don't have an issue with their. Some shorter fat guys do, because they have short/fat fingers.

Andy Bolton on the Deadlift - 1003...

Ok, I'm out of touch on this one. Cool that it was finally done though - he's definitely got a place in the history books! Has anyone other than Andy done it in competition? I've seen him in Strongman competitions but the name didn't ring a bell until I read the article.

This isn't happening, it only thinks it's happening.

He's the only one. I don't

He's the only one. I don't think anyone else has even attempted it. There's still only ~12 guys that have done 900+.

Men who have deadlifted 900 pounds

I would say that with geared

I would say that with geared lifting the deadlift will commonly but not always be the worst life. But it depends on how good of a bencher you are. If you notice there is a lot of guys out there who squat and deadlift more than they bench. A lot of those guys are into doing full meets.

But the guys who are the best with shirted benching will often bench more than they deadlift. To begin with it's common to be able to get up to 300 lbs extra out of a shirt. Some may argue different, but not with the best teams in the world. They often have custom shirts and have someone who knows how to do tailoring to make them better. You will never get that much out of a deadlift suit.

Secondly, just as with any other lift, when striving to have a world record in any given lift, folks often train only for one lift. A lot of the folks on my team train only for the bench press. They say its a lot easier to excel at one lift than it is to do all three at once. You gain a lot faster that way. I did that for a while and it does work, but now I'm focusing a lot more on squat and deadlift again and am thinking of doing some full meets this year.

I think ANDY BOLTON did 1102

I think ANDY BOLTON did 1102 deadlift officially. Kennelly has attempted 1102 bench and got close...but his 1075 was pretty impressive. Even raw, he is amazing. I saw him 600 for 10 onces pretty fast and 405 for 22...so easy, it was a joke.

Andy Bolton 1102 deadlift?

I think Bolton's 455 kg (1003 pounds) regulation deadlift record still stands. 1102 pounds (actually, 1102.5 pounds) is 500 kg, so you'll see the number quite often as a lifting "benchmark" (pun sort of intended). Apparently there is an 1102 pound deadlift out there, but it's by Benedikt Magnusson and it's a Hummer Tire deadlift, not regulation.
