Fish Oil ? for Todd

Todd,

You mentioned in my Diet Help thread that I should be taking some fish oil.

Do you recommend a certain brand? Or can I just go down to the drug store and pick up a bottle of cod liver oil and go to town?

Thanks,

-Erik

Well, first, I recommended fish oil. Not Cod liver oil. Cod is a fish, but it's not "cod fish oil" it's cod LIVER oil. two different things. It has omega 3s, but fish oil is better. As for brands.......I constantly switch brands. Just make sure it comes from Norway and Wales. They produce the purest. Lots of brands do, just call the company, it's usually not a big deal. Buy small bottles so that they're not sitting around for weeks or months, as they will get rancid. The fresher the better. I.e., no 10 lbs. for $20 at Sam's club.

Awesome, thanks again.

I think Kim has posted before that he likes fish oil from Health from the Sun. Here's a link to their oil - if I'm wrong, maybe he'll see this and tell you the one he likes to use.

I like Carlson's Salmon Oil, and Todd et al. is right, fish oil just about does good for EVERYTHING. After reading up on the topic, I'm surprised it doesn't babysit your kids!

Actually, you'd be surprised. According to a study out of Sweden.......

Seriosuly though, speaking of kids and brands of fish oil. Coromega has developed a fish oil supplement that is similar to a pudding or yogurt that taste fine. It's a great way to add some good fats not only to your diet but your kids. Most kids are not going to want to or simply won't be able to take big fish oil capsules, but the Coromega product is great. I got some thinking that it would taste like crap, but it's very palpable. Do a search for it and I think at their website that they will still send you a free sample to try.

Sample is on the way. I've been working with my fiance on getting her into better shape (not that she needs it, but she wants it). So this might be another way of sneaking more healthy foods in.

What are some brands you know of that produce it from there?

Fish Oil ? for Todd

Carlson, Coromega, Nordic Naturals, Omega Brite, PhytoPharmica, Poliquin's blend, there are others.

Awesome. Thanks. This was the reply I received from Sun:

>>Thank you for contacting us.

>>The fish oil in our products is from wild fish (sardines, anchovies) >>caught off the shores of Chile and Peru.

I don't know that I've used that brand, I may have, and they may have fine quality. Anchovies and Sardines are high in omega 3s, but a lot of stuff out of South America has consumer quality issues. Consumer Labs recently tested a bunch of brands of fish oil for quality, purity, etc., I would contact them and see if I could get a copy of their report, if you're curious. I have not seen it, but someone emailed me something about it a few days ago. It may have some good info. If anything it will definitely tell which ones to absolutely stay away from.

Interesting !What about omega 6 sources? I bought some evening primrose oil is that any good?

Fish Oil ? for Todd

It's ok, not a high priority IMO.

Omega 6's are a good fat so to speak, but we typically get plenty of it in our diet anyway. Hence the typical diet is deficient in and benefits more so by supplementing with omega 3's.

Okay, so if I want to build up my supplement's cabinet (no, I am not T.O. Smiling), beside doc's pro protein, BCCAAs, creatine and Lglute. I need to get fishoil, what else? What was that thing for controlling cortisol? I forget.

I haven't been able to find any proof of the following. With the having been stated, there isn't any other explanation either myself or the VA Dr. can attribute to the matter.

Approx. 30 yrs. ago, I began awakening each night to urinate. I accepted this as a course of aging; I was in my late 30s. Last yr., I began using 5 gr. of fish oil, only to notice after some months I no longer had this problem. My prostate has been checked, but it was fine. The Dr. is a firm believer of this tonic, only cautioning I need be aware of the possibility of nose bleeds and reduce my intake if necessary.

Charles Poliquin & Mauro

Charles Poliquin & Mauro Pasquale, among others including myself are correct when they state that there is no disease or condition in which fish oil will not benefit one in treating, fighting, preventing, or otherwise helping.

A Friend of my family started taking it... she had a strong family history of cholesterol problems. Had been taking medication for 20+ years. She's been med free for close to 8 years now, her Doc is now taking and recommending them to her patients.

Seen blood pressure drops in a lot of folks.

It is as close a magic snake oil as anything.
