Finger tip pushups? What's your opinion about them?

Hey I was wondering do you guys do finger tip pushups, knuckle pushups etc to strengthen your hands or are they simply okey exercises to do and but there are way better exercises that I should be doing? Are there negative effects of finger tip pushups?

Thank you.

I used to do them...

When I was more involved in martial arts, Kyokushin Karate, I did them a few times a week to strengthen the fingers for thrusting techniques. Got to where I could do thumb and two fingers for sets of 15. I think they did negatively effect my sense of touch but other than that I don't think there were any other negatives. They didn't do anything for my grip strength though. I'm now using CoC grippers and those make a big difference in grip strength, so much so that I've stopped using straps as much on assistance lifts like shrugs because I don't need them which I assume would have a nice carryover effect into any grappling style of martial art as well.

They're not so bad that they cause cancer, but whatever your hoping to accomplish with them, there is probably a better method.

I did a lot of these when I was a teenager and involved in boxing. Back then, I use to do a lot of other stupid stuff that now I realize probably didn't have much usefullness. I could do about 110 on my finger tips and did 33 on thumbs and index fingers. Now at age 60, keyboarding is very difficult. My grip is nothing special. Young and foolish.

Just plain goofy. Party trick nonsense.

Well, knuckle (fist) pushups are perfectly safe and healthy. Back in the day, I could do more of them than the normal kind, simply because I did them more.

They have three major benefit for fighters. First, they stretch the ligaments of the fingers so that the fist becomes more compact, pushing the second knuckles in. Thus, the big first knuckles protrude more than the second, which are much weaker and always protrude more in untrained fists.

The second benefit is to strengthen the wrist to withstand impact.

The third is that they force the fist and arm into correct alignment. If your fist is slightly bent or uneven, the pushup will be painful.

Finger pushups I did much less and more as a party trick. I didn't like doing them and wouldn't recommend them.

Knuckle push-ups also add an inch or two of ROM. I can't do the standard type because my wrists just aren't flexible enough.

Also, I really like them pushups on dumbbells or, even more evil, on chains hanging from the rack. Haven't done those in forever.

I used to do them everyday. I could do them with two fingers on each hand and only thumbs. It never improved my ability to actually do anything. I think it is a waste of time.
