fat loss-jogging or cycling

I was wondering what burns more calories, jogging or cyclin on an indoor stationary bike (using same work output on each)-will calories burned be equal?

thanks

Weight training exceeds both in burning fat.

Generally speaking, jogging will burn more calories for the same duration and Rate of Perceived Effort (RPE) than cycling. However, in trained cyclists (or even recreational cyclists, such as myself) the answer gets a little more complicated.

If a person is not trained in that modality, they may not be able to sustain a sufficent effort level to merrit that type of exercise. For example, I can ride a bike at a fairly good clip (80% Max Heart Rate) for two to three hours, but can't jog but about a quarter mile without almost dying and gasping for air. Which one is going to be more productive for fat loss, calorie burning and conditioning? Obviously in my case the cycling is going to be considerably more productive.

When Graham stated that resistance training burns more calories than either cycling or jogging, what he really means to say is that the added muscle mass gained from such training will increase the body's BMR which will then burn more calories.

Diet is still the most productive method for fat loss though.

Thanks Doc M for expanding on that, I should have gone into more detail.

How much do you cycle a week?

Holy crap you are my clone! Same -=exact=- problem here. However from all the information i have digested and the advice i have been given, sprint training cant be beat.

I would ditch the cardio and spend the time cooking healthy meals instead.

If you add up 3 - 30 sessions a week.. that's about long enough to cook a week's worth of meals.

What weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of nails?

As you stated, if you expend roughly the same amount of work you will burn roughly the same amount of calories. Cycling might be easier on the joints though...

As the others stated diet is most important, followed by weight training, and third by extra calorie expenditure for body composition.

veling1,

1) what are your fitness goals, and where are you now in terms of fitness? 30 lbs overweight with 28% body fat, or 60 lbs overweight, or only 12 lbs overweight?

2) what is your age? is your metabolism extremely fast, very slow, or ???

3) what are your fitness goals? strength, endurance, or strength-endurance?

4) what are your sports goals: do you want to be a powerlifter, a no-holds-barred fighter, a triathlete, muay thai kickboxer, or what?

if you're into fighting (strength-endurance), i can help you to lose weight the way you need to. anything else (powerlifting, bodybuilding, strength), i defer to the others on this board.

btw, when i train mostly with weights, my appetite and need for sleep soar (to 5,000+ calories, 9-10 hours per night). on the other hand, when i do aerobic and cardio threshhold training (primarily), my need for food plummets (from about 3,000+ to 2200 calories or so) and my need for sleep (5 hours per night) remains the same. think about it. nothing is done in a metabolic vacuum.

There is no universal answer for the choice of activity used to help achive a negative calorie balance. As everyone is unique, in the real world you will have to look at whats viable for you.

What activities do you enjoy doing and what activities will you be motivated to sustain during the fat loss process? Do you want any other change along with the reduction in belly girth: muscle mass, sports specific performace, stress reduction etc?

Even the nutritional aspect differs from person to person? But its the most important part, read the zig zag article and estimating your caloric needs, it just makes the whole process clearer.

I run 6-8 100 yard sprints twice a week to compliment my three gym workouts during the week. This works best for me.

You can do both but

You can do both but alternating the two. Isn't it exciting? Because sometimes when we get used to what we do or it has become a routine, we lose the interest.

I'm with Todd on this one.

Let me not judge my fellowmen, but understand them, Lord, and when the casting of the stones begins, remind me of my many sins.

Great..

In my container the cycling is leaving to be significantly additional creative.

What I do is moderate weight

What I do is moderate weight training or periodization followed by 20 minutes of cardio (on light days) then on off lifting days I do cardio. Both types of training help fat loss. There were some studies a few years ago that doing more then 20-30 minutes of cardio (perhaps oin lifting days) may raise cortisol levels too much for any benefit for muscle growth. Having more muscle helps the body more conitunously burn fat.

Being older I believe

Being older I believe jogging burns more calories and is more of a natural leg motion but wonder if the impact of contunious jogging may cause joint damage in the future. Perhaps if cycling is safer for the joints (by asking a profesional) jogging could be done moderately with some fun biking on weekends. I try not to do just one exercise but try many for more interesting ways with different results.
