For many centuries, perhaps as far back as man’s ascendance on this planet, man has recognized himself as a dichotomous being. This ancient self-awareness saw that part of us which is visible as comprising the natural man, and, that part of us which is invisible as comprising the mind. Somewhere along the evolutionary path, the concept of man possessing a spirit entered into the equation, giving rise to the notion of man being a “mind, body, spirit” trichotomous being. Contemporaneously, a heated discussion rages among theologists whether man is di- or trichotomous.

Four score and seven years ago, the gyms with platforms outnumbered the gyms without 1000 to one. Today, the gyms without platforms outnumber the gyms with platforms 1000 to one. Indeed, four score and seven years ago, there were only 1001 gyms, give or take a score! The one thousand and first gym was probably a Vic Tanny's salon, then just beginning. All the top bodybuilders call him “Papa Joe.” I think it’s clear why. Hell, he -- his organization -- is the principal source of their upcomeance, their survival, their incomes -- their very identities. There is little money to be made or glory to be derived as a bodybuilder outside the confines of Joe Weider’s vast empire.
