by Frederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D.

From Powerlifting USA, Vol 10 No 4. Novemeber/1986

Foreword: Doyle Kenady died just before he was to be inducted into the Powerlifting Hall of Fame back in the year 2000. Those of you who knew Doyle knew him as a gentle, good man. He was a close friend, and will be missed. This article, while written several years before his untimely death, will stay on this website forever as a token of my respect to him.

PAPA JOE

I wrote this article nearly 30 years ago.  Recognize the writing style? Fred

            All the top bodybuilders call him “Papa Joe.”  I think it’s clear why.  Hell, he -- his organization -- is the principal source of their upcomeance, their survival,  their incomes -- their very identities.  There is little money to be made or glory to be derived as a bodybuilder outside the confines of Joe Weider’s vast empire.

PASSION...and Peak Performance

Do YOU have what it takes?

NOT commitment to excellence...

Rather, utter disdain for anything less!

The cure for cancer turned out to be worse than the disease!

Whew...turned out to be a tough row to hoe.  But the light is visible at the end of the tunnel.  Will be back soon, folks...thanks all for keeping things going in my absence.

I'll give a blow-by-blow account soon.

TOOLS FOR CERTIFIED FITNESS TRAINERS

Let’s face it, all personal fitness trainers need a host of rather sophisticated resources at their fingertips to fulfill their professional obligations to their clients.  Sure, you can “get by” with nothing other than knowledge of how to use the equipment in the gym you train your clients in.  Sure, your knowledge of nutritional science is adequate to provide rudimentary guidance to your clients.  You would not be certified without these tools.  And, “getting by” is NOT the hallmark of ISSA-certified personal trainers!  I know, because I taught many of you personally.  And those of you whom I did not train followed the curriculum I developed for ISSA.

A Brother’s Saga

The mighty men of Iceland sing
against the wind and winter's sting.
Viking blood and Viking ale
have conquered worlds in truth and tale.
But never a man of ice and winter
doth lift the Manhood Stone like Hinter.

Doth lift the Manhood Stone like Hinter.

Blue lagoons and lava caves;
Geysers blow, volcanos rage.
Such a place is Hinter's host;
"The Gates of Hell" it's called by most.
But never a man loved home like Hinter;
He revelled in the cold dark winter.

He revelled in the cold dark winter.

Dreamers, Shapers, Seekers, Makers

Frederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D

“That’s the magic of the word: We are left to imagine our own worst definitions. And in the process, we render the word more unspeakably awful than the speaker ever could -- just as the monsters on the old radio horror shows, being products of our own dread, were scarier than anything TV could show us.”

Pygmalion of Irondom

Mythic And True Stories Surrounding The Concurrent Births Of Organized Bodybuilding And The Weider Empire

Fred HatfieldFrederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D., MSS

As the legend goes, an ancient Cypriot King named Pygmalion sculpted a beautiful girl from a block of granite, only to fall madly in love with it. He successfully begged Aphrodite to bring the statue to life. They lived happily ever after.
