Fearlessness In Children Linked To Athletic Performance
Researchers in New Zealand suggest that children who display low levels of fear are more likely to excel in sports when they become adults.
This study, which was published in Behavior Research and Therapy, used a sample of 1,037 babies born in the early 1970's. Information was gathered at ages 5, 7, 9 and 11 via questionnaires, which measured how much the subjects worried about things. When they were age 26, it was noted whether they had participated in organized sports of any kind. It was found that those who were the most courageous were twice as likely to represent their province (meaning they were amongst the best in the region) and three times more likely to have played sports at a high level.
With this study in mind, we're not necessarily suggesting you dangle your kid over the edge of a cliff and tell him, "Get used to it!"

Carcinogen In Fried Foods May Have Been Identified
An AP story notes that scientists may have found another reason why fried foods are unhealthy. A naturally occurring amino acid, asparagines, is converted to the carcinogen, acrylamide, when heated with certain sugars. Acrylamide has been shown to contribute to cancer in laboratory animals, but has not been shown to be a major contributor in humans.
It has been shown that acrylamide is higher in potatoes then other vegetables. Given that French Fries and potato chips are a staple food in many peoples' diet, this may be a big discovery. Then again, for something to be done about it means folks must stop eating fried foods!

Fast Food Chains Are Reacting To The Media Blitz
A recent article in USA Today by Bruce Horovitz notes that fast food chains are taking notice to something. Lawsuits? Public awareness of health? Whatever the case may be, the fast food restaurants are reacting. McDonald's has announced plans to change its frying methods of French fries. Burger King, Arby's, Wendy's and of course Subway have been on the bandwagon longer than that.
According to the article, McDonald's stock is at a seven year low while analysts believe that smaller regional fast food restaurants that offer healthier alternatives will thrive. In the mean time, the larger chains are fighting back by offering yogurt, grilled sandwiches and vegan alternatives.
Is the public listening? Consider the case of Subway. Jared Fogle, the former 425 lbs college student who slimmed down to 1909 lbs started pitching for Subway. Since then, sales are up 40%, and believe it or not, Subway has more restaurants than McDonalds!
The fact is that while consumers are thinking more healthy, it is not known whether this will lean the public up. They are still eating calories and trends in exercise must be considered.

Body Image Problems Amongst Bodybuilders?
This amazes me. A Reuter's report notes that scientists have noted that some men who lift weights believe they have a poor body image. This is causing them to work harder to enhance their physique. This new condition, classified as muscular dysmorphia (MD) may cause men to have a preoccupation with becoming more fit. A unique syndrome of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), scientists claim this may lead to depression and anxiety.
Scientists note that research is needed to put a stop to this disorder.

Weider Publications Looking To Sell
An October 8th Reuters article noted that Joe Weider might be looking to get out of publishing. Interestingly, it doesn't seem like the end of the "Weider Empire" but rather a way to continue to grow:
"While the company said its growth prospects were excellent, that "growth implies the need for additional capital," Weider Publications President and Chief Executive Russell Denson said in a brief release."
It is believed that selling the rights to publish Weider's magazines could raise between $250 to $350 million.
